This therapy involves helping couples learn to communicate and resolve problems that are leading them to distress and discomfort in their intimate relationship. This is similar to “family therapy” in its work on changing the relationship dynamics to improve the presenting problem.
Also, as in family therapy, relationship therapy postulates that change in one member will affect the relationship, so when both members of the relationship are working on change it creates a bigger and more lasting change than if only one member was changing.
In fact, it assumes that when one member changes it will create changes in the other, thus working together for change is more advantageous as it allows the couple to mindfully make these changes.
